The physical realisation of this artwork was undertaken in collaboration with the research group, the French Institute of Pondicherry, and the Maitri Collective, under the supervision of Senthil Babu Dandhapani, as part of the programme on “Nature, Knowledge, and Labour in the Coasts and Deltas”. The research team consisted of Arun Kumar Abhimanue Sulochana, Reshma Reddi, and Ranjit Kuruveli.

The aim of this artwork is to portray the changing nature of the relationship between people and the environment in specific territorial contexts. Starting from a community-based analysis and integrating local, political, and social perspectives — with a particular focus on labour — the project examines the impact of land grabbing, environmental disasters, and climate change through a political and epistemological theoretical framework.
The entire project is grounded in an anthropological exploration of the territory of Manigappangu (Tamil Nadu), with particular attention to the hamlets of Perumal Pettai and Anaikovil. Working primarily, though not exclusively, with the Dalit community, the project seeks to promote a critical perspective and stimulate reflection on the possibilities of collective mobilisation.

Starting from the assumption that art itself can act as a producer of Commons, the project set out to test two hypotheses. On the one hand, it investigates art and artistic practices as producers of shared visual representations of social and environmental transformations. On the other, it explores art as a potential generator of Common Action.
Several PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) tools implemented during the two months of field research — carried out collectively within the programme “Nature, Knowledge and Labour in the Coasts and Deltas” at the French Institute of Pondicherry — are described. This first phase of fieldwork aimed to generate a visual dialogue with inhabitants, serving as a starting point for constructing a shared visual representation of social and environmental change: a form of common knowledge capable of confronting people with their beliefs and present conditions.

In the second phase, the artwork “Thaumantropos”, an interactive symbolic installation, was developed through a reflective process carried out together with the village population. Its purpose was to mobilise people to protect their environment and claim their rights, co-producing a symbolic representation of the current situation by involving participants in the visualisation and creation of an object embodying protest. The ultimate goal of the artwork is to function as a tool for community mobilisation and the expression of dissent.
The artwork draws inspiration from the Victorian optical illusion known as the thaumatrope, chosen for its ability to provoke reflection on how a shift in perspective can reveal connections between apparently separate elements. “Thaumantropos” reinterprets the thaumatrope on a monumental and interactive scale, taking the form of a vertical banner iconographically inspired by protest placards. The optical illusion is activated by two people rotating a painted blade around a central pivot.
No longer limited to an individual experience, “Thaumantropos” becomes a moving symbolic object designed to communicate a message to a broader audience. It operates both as a participatory artwork for those involved in its creation — who bring it to life through movement — and as an interactive object for spectators, who may themselves become active participants through the dissemination of its call to action.

Beyond functioning as a banner that can be used during demonstrations, the object aspires to become a symbol of a movement of Common Action, asserting that the protection and defence of the Commons can only take place through collective action. Exploring the ambivalence of the notion of protection — what should be protected, and by whom — the two images on the surfaces of “Thaumantropos” were conceived.
On one side, the sun symbolises both the territory and the Commons as a shared element belonging to the entirety of Manigappangu and its two communities. On the other side, human figures arranged in a circle dance and move in a dynamic gesture aimed both at enclosing something and at protecting the circle itself — an action that unites singularities into a single collective flow. The objective was to create a prototype that could be replicated by the inhabitants themselves during collective mobilisations for the rights of the village of Manigappangu. The hope is that the community may eventually become the producer of this symbol, actively generating its own protest tools and fully appropriating the meaning of Common Action embodied by the banner.

L’obiettivo di quest’opera è rappresentare la natura mutevole della relazione tra le persone e l’ambiente in specifici contesti territoriali. A partire da un’analisi basata sulla comunità e integrando prospettive locali, politiche e sociali — con un’attenzione particolare al lavoro — il progetto analizza l’impatto dell’accaparramento delle terre, dei disastri ambientali e del cambiamento climatico attraverso una cornice teorica politico-epistemologica.
L’intero progetto si fonda su un’esplorazione antropologica del territorio di Manigappangu (Tamil Nadu), con un focus specifico sui villaggi di Perumal Pettai e Anaikovil. Lavorando principalmente, ma non esclusivamente, con la comunità Dalit, il progetto intende promuovere uno sguardo critico e stimolare una riflessione sulle possibilità di mobilitazione collettiva.

Partendo dal presupposto che l’arte possa essere essa stessa produttrice di Commons, il progetto ha voluto mettere alla prova due ipotesi. Da un lato, l’arte e le pratiche artistiche come produttrici di rappresentazioni visive condivise delle trasformazioni sociali e ambientali; dall’altro, l’arte come potenziale generatrice di Azione Comune.
Nel testo vengono descritti diversi strumenti di PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) utilizzati nei due mesi dedicati alla ricerca sul campo, svolta collettivamente all’interno del programma “Nature, Knowledge and Labour in the Coasts and Deltas” dell’Institut Français de Pondichéry. Questa prima fase di lavoro mirava a generare un dialogo visivo con gli abitanti, ponendo le basi per la costruzione di una rappresentazione visiva condivisa delle trasformazioni sociali e ambientali: una forma di conoscenza comune capace di mettere le persone di fronte alle proprie credenze e alla condizione presente.

Nella seconda fase è stata realizzata l’opera “Thaumantropos”, un’installazione simbolica e interattiva sviluppata attraverso un processo riflessivo condiviso con la popolazione del villaggio. L’obiettivo era mobilitare le persone nella difesa del proprio ambiente e nella rivendicazione dei propri diritti, co-producendo una rappresentazione simbolica della situazione attuale e coinvolgendo gli abitanti nella visualizzazione e realizzazione di un oggetto capace di incarnare la protesta. Il fine ultimo dell’opera è diventare uno strumento di mobilitazione comunitaria ed espressione del dissenso.
L’opera trae ispirazione dall’illusione ottica vittoriana nota come thaumatrope, scelta per la sua capacità di stimolare una riflessione sulle possibilità che emergono da un cambiamento di prospettiva e di rendere visibile la connessione tra elementi apparentemente separati. “Thaumantropos” reinterpreta il thaumatrope su scala monumentale e interattiva, assumendo la forma di uno stendardo verticale iconograficamente ispirato ai cartelli di protesta. L’illusione ottica prende vita grazie all’azione di due persone che ruotano una lama dipinta attorno a un perno centrale.
Non più limitato a un’esperienza individuale, “Thaumantropos” diventa un oggetto simbolico in movimento, pensato per trasmettere un messaggio allo spettatore. Da un lato è un’opera partecipativa per chi prende parte alla sua realizzazione, dandole vita attraverso il movimento; dall’altro è un dispositivo interattivo per il pubblico, che può trasformarsi in soggetto attivo attraverso la diffusione del suo invito all’azione.

Oltre a poter essere utilizzato come striscione durante le manifestazioni, l’oggetto aspira a diventare il simbolo di un movimento di Azione Comune, affermando che la tutela e la difesa dei Commons possono avvenire solo attraverso un’azione collettiva. Indagando l’ambivalenza del concetto di protezione — che cosa deve essere protetto e da chi — sono state concepite le due immagini presenti sulle superfici di “Thaumantropos”.
Su un lato, il sole simboleggia sia il territorio sia i Commons come elemento condiviso dall’intero territorio di Manigappangu e dalle due comunità. Sull’altro lato, figure umane disposte in cerchio danzano e si muovono in una dinamica che mira allo stesso tempo a racchiudere qualcosa e a proteggere il cerchio stesso: un’azione che unisce le singolarità in un unico flusso collettivo. L’intento era creare un prototipo replicabile dagli abitanti stessi durante mobilitazioni collettive per i diritti del villaggio di Manigappangu. L’auspicio è che la comunità possa diventare produttrice autonoma di questo simbolo, creando attivamente i propri strumenti di protesta e appropriandosi pienamente del significato di Azione Comune incarnato dallo stendardo.
